Memorial Day is a celebration of those who have fallen for Old Glory. It is not about hot dogs and burgers and brats. It is not just an excuse to take a day off from work or school. Memorial Day is the day that we honor the sacrifices that were made by our brave men and women who died for the Red, White and Blue. Here is a short narrative by President Ronald Reagan…

It all started when our founding fathers fought for their freedom against the British.

It all started in the 1700s but today America is over 240 years old and we honor those who have fought and died for our freedom in many wars since the American Revolution. Lee Greenwood’s classic is one that we should sing proudly today.

War is not about glory as portrayed in many movies. War is a grind and soldiers depend on each other while fighting for fat guys who flip burgers to celebrate them. (Yes I’m talking about myself LOL)

It is often said that our soldiers are fearless. I’m not sure about that, but… Our men and women who have fought and died for us are willing to embrace their fear and march on. They do it for YOU and ME.

For those of you who have never experienced a military funeral, there is little quite as dignified and touching. My family has fought in every war since World War I and I have been brought to tears many times while honoring their service and subsequent death.

There is nothing quite like hearing Amazing Grace on bagpipes folks.

They do it all for you and I. They do it for our children and our grandchildren. Many years ago a band called Madison Rising did my favorite version of our National Anthem. Why would Madison Rising do it better than anyone else? This rock band was made for America by putting together those who were willing to fight for America and subsequently turn that passion into music.

MADISON RISING WAS THE CREATION OF NEW YORK CITY ENTREPRENEUR RICHARD MGRDECHIAN, WHO CHOSE THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND BY PLACING ADS ON CRAIGSLIST AND YOUTUBE, AND THEN HOLDING “ENDLESS” AUDITIONS IN 2011.[1] DAVE BRAY, THE ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER FOR THE BAND, ENLISTED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY AT THE AGE OF 18. BEFORE BEING SHIPPED OFF, DAVE FOUND AN INTEREST IN MUSIC, AND FORMED A BAND IN HIS GARAGE HIS SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. ACCORDING TO BRAY, “IT WAS MY LAST-DITCH EFFORT AT REBELLION BEFORE SIGNING MY LIFE AWAY.”[2] THE BAND WAS FIRST NAMED AFTER MADISON STREET IN HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, WHERE THEIR STUDIO, WATER MUSIC RECORDERS, WAS LOCATED.[3] LATER ON, THE BAND ALSO ACKNOWLEDGED ITS NAME AS BEING IN HONOR OF U.S. FOUNDING FATHER JAMES MADISON, BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO “BRING BACK PATRIOTISM AND THE BELIEF SYSTEM FROM A TIME WHEN THE CONSTITUTION WAS BEING WRITTEN”.[4] WHILE OTHER NAMES SUCH AS “AUTHORS OF LIBERTY” AND “SOLDIERS FOR FREEDOM” WERE CONSIDERED, MADISON RISING FELT THE MOST “ROCK AND ROLL” OF THEM ALL, EVOKING IMAGERY OF HIM “RISING FROM THE GRAVE”.[5][6](SOURCE)

So Madison Rising gets the honor of playing our National Anthem. They fought for the Red, White and Blue while guys like Jimi Hendrix were trying to find tri-colored acid blots. I do love his version as well.

I have been feeling sorry for myself for a couple of days because my weekend plans blew up. But imagine how the fallen might have loved to have traded their fates for my ruined weekend. We can still whine because tough men and women fought to defend our freedom.

They did it for America and please think about that while you stuff your face today. If there are any left overs, send them to my house.
