A few days ago I came across an article at HuffPo.com entitled, “The Destruction of Memory.” It was written by none other than former Democrat Senator, philanderer and current hack Gary Hart. Yes, that Gary Hart.
How do I know he’s still a hack, other than the fact that he’s a Democrat? It didn’t take long to confirm, for in the very first paragraph of his article he writes, “You can’t claim to love your country and hate its government.”
He explains that that statement isn’t as popular anymore – that more and more politicians are running their campaigns claiming to be outsiders – running against Washington.
The message of his article becomes clear by the third paragraph: “… the pretty, obvious truth is that there is value in experience in government.”
Let me translate: Stop challenging old dog establishment politicians and just let them stay in Washington for as long as they wish.

Hart explains that newcomers just get in the way, that they have “little if any experience and no knowledge of history.”
Yes, Gary – they have no knowledge of backroom deals and pork barrel spending. They have little experience compromising their core beliefs away until they have none left. Only then will they fit in. Right Gary?
He says he is “a strong supporter of President Obama,” but claims Obama would have been better served spending more than a week and a half in the Senate (I added the time period).
Regarding foreign policy, he states that reading “‘Lawrence in Arabia‘ provides invaluable lessons in the history of the Middle East.” Or you could just watch the movie, starring Peter O’Toole. After that, maybe he could watch the series of “The Mummy” movies with Brendan Fraser, to see what other evil lurks in the desert region.
He concludes by saying, “So, the churning of leadership in an effort to destabilize the government of the country we all claim to love has many consequences, not the least of which is the loss of experience, the lessons of history, and the recollection of what failed in the past and is not likely to succeed now and in the future. By undermining our government, we are destroying our national memory.”
Well Gary – where do I begin? How about at the beginning, where it is well documented that the founders envisioned a citizen legislature. They did not wish to see Congress and the Senate become careers. We all know that “history,” and we’re not even in government.
It’s you old hacks that, over the years, have made government so large and so complicated, purposely I might add, that no one can navigate it.
Let me put this simply, so that Mr. Hart may understand. With every job, comes an employee handbook – outlining the proper way to do the job you were hired for. Some manuals explain the job well – some are too vague.
But, your employee handbook, your how-to manual, was written by some of history’s greatest minds – our founding fathers. They laid out in the Declaration, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and tons of other writings and correspondences, exactly what they envisioned and how to properly “run” our government.
The problem with you, and all the other want-to-be permanent fixtures in Washington, is that you reject the “real” lessons from our history – pretend they don’t exist.
The dirty little secret and absolute fact is that if one can read and comprehend what our founders wrote, there would be “No Experience Necessary”!
